Authentic Teaching Program (ATP)
Put Your Best Foot Forward
Although schools try to improve education in a variety of ways, changing classroom instruction has the single greatest impact on learning. Over the past eighteen years, ATP has trained teachers in the use of a highly effective teaching strategy that brings real life experiences into the classroom. The final project is designed for teachers to demonstrate their mastery of this strategy by visiting a unique location in the world and generating authentic lesson plans.
Major goals of the program are to:
- Allow teachers to better explain the importance and relevance of the course and the topics covered.
- Permit teachers to demonstrate real life applications of the content and skills in the curriculum.
- Encourages teachers to turn the curriculum into an application of the student’s life
- Trains teachers to generate more authentic, hands-on activities that ask students to build upon their own personal experiences
- Increases student motivation
- Increases concept attainment
- Create improved student assessment
The program requirements include:
- An application process in which teachers are selected to participate
- Once accepted, teachers assume 100% of the program cost
- Attendance to two 4 hour pre-excursion and one 4 hour post excursion workshops
- Ascertain authentic teaching strategies
- Participate in Project Adventure based activities
- Travel to final project location during summer break
- Creation of authentic lesson plans from the excursion to demonstrate mastery of the teaching strategy.
- Serve as “turnkey” instructors by demonstrating the use of the lessons that were created from the program.
- Completion of program evaluations
This year’s travel program will bring us to Costa Rica in the summer of 2016. There is a variety of activities planned to ensure that all subject areas and grade levels will benefit from this excursion.
