Once accepted into the program, participants will undergo 2 four hour workshops before the excursion.  There will also be one 4 hour workshop after the excursion.

Component 1 – Pre-Excursion Workshops (8 hours)
The first component involves the awareness of the travel opportunity by identifying the concepts and skills in their curriculum that can benefit from the travel. This is meant to help focus the participants to a series of topics to research during the excursion.

The first pre-excursion workshop focuses on how to use the authentic teaching strategy to bring personal experiences into the classroom. The objectives are:
  • Discuss the philosophy of the authentic teaching model
  • Explain the model’s benefits to student learning
  • Identify the five elements of authenticity in sample lessons
  • State the different ways authentic lessons can be used in a classroom.
  • Identify concepts/skills that can be addressed in Costa Rica
  • Lean how to capture authentic experiences while travelling

  • Identify core values of the group
  • Build a positive relationship that fosters communication and cooperation with each member of the group
  • Establishment and accomplishment of individual goals
  • Development of teamwork to overcome a problem

Component 2 – The Final project (Excursion)
The second component is the travel itself. This is the time to capture authentic experiences, artifacts, photographs, etc. and start to develop lesson plans. Teachers will have time to collaborate and to share ideas and discoveries.

This year’s travel program will bring us to Costa Rica in the summer of 2016. There is a variety of activities planned to ensure that all subject areas and grade levels will benefit from this excursion.
